Candace is an emerging composer and pianist based in Ottawa, Ontario. She has recently won first place in Jâca’s emerging composer competition with her piece, Melodies from my Mother. Her compositions explore themes in global music and soundscapes and her winning piece is emblematic of this. Candace’s music has been described as showcasing “a unique and powerful artistic voice.” (Jâca ensemble)
Primarily focusing on instrumental pieces, Candace seeks to create unity among dissonance by finding harmony between unlikely instrumental pairings and achieving “consonant dissonances”. Upcoming performances of her pieces include: Dancing in the Rain, written for Balinese gamelan and 2 violins (world premiere: University of Waterloo, TBD), Here is Home, written for choir (Virtual choir, December 2021), and Melodies from my Mother, written for the Jâca ensemble composer competition (world premiere: TBD).
Candace is currently earning her Master of Music in composition at the University of Ottawa and holds an Honors Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, Join honors biology, with music intensive specialization from University of Waterloo (’20). She has studied composition under Karen Sunabacka and is currently studying with Kelly-Marie Murphy.
