Come To Community
for SATB + Soloists

Commissioned by the Conrad Grebel University College, the intention of this piece is to highlight the importance of coming together as a community in our increasingly individualistic society. The music reflects this message by gradually unifying rhythm and harmony over three verses.
The first verse portrays the search for community through individual lines that interact contrapuntally in passing motions. The second verse is an appeal to build a community, filled with hopeful longing. Each vocal part becomes more cohesive with its neighbors until a resolution of strength and unity is achieved in the final verse. All voices now commonly share the same rhythm and depend on one another to create beautiful harmony.
Additionally, the bell - which has long been used as a tool to gather a community - is imitated with tolls that beckons us to commune.
